This article will introduce the new features and performance enhancements that have been added to Teradata SQL Assistant 13.10 Edition 2. The focus of this release is on usability and performance.

Please see What’s new in Teradata SQL Assistant 13.10 for details of the new features that were added to the original 13.10 release.

The Query Window

An Open Recent Query menu has been added to the File menu. Whenever you open or save a Query file the file name will be added at the top of this menu. To re-open the file at a later time simply click on the file name in the displayed list.

A new tool button has been added to the Query toolbar. Clicking this button while the start/end delimiters of a logical block are highlighted will select the entire block. For example:

New options have been added to the Code Editor tab to allow you to specify the Font Style (Bold and or Italic), in addition to the color, for each type of syntax element.

The Answer set window

When saving an Answerset window that contains multiple tabs you will now be asked whether you wish to save all tabs to a single Excel workbook.

The History window

The Current Data Source filter can now be used even if you are connected to multiple data sources. This filter will cause it to display the History rows for all data sources that you are currently connected to. If you are not connected to any data source it will display the rows for the data source that you were most recently connected to.

Other Changes

A Re-Connect item has been added to the Tools menu. This allows you to reconnect to a data source after the session was dropped for any reason. (Such as your computer having gone into hibernation) By using this menu you will not need to Disconnect or re-enter your connection information in order to reconnect.

Note that the Re-Connect menu applies to the current Query window only. If you were connected to multiple data sources you will need to reconnect each one individually.

You may now specify a color to be associated with each data source. This color will be displayed as a narrow stripe across the top of the Query window when you are connected to that data source. In addition, the Data Source node in the Database Explorer Tree will be underlined using this color. This feature is intended for those who connect to multiple data sources at one time. Using the feature should help to ensure that you do not accidentally submit a query to the wrong data source.

The color can be set using the Advanced tab of the Teradata.Net or Oracle.Net connection dialogs. If you normally use ODBC you will need to create a Teradata.Net data source with the same name as your ODBC DSN and set the color for this data source. SQL Assistant will assume that they are the same data source if the names match, and will use that same color when you connect via ODBC.

Support has been added for the Oracle .Net Data Provider (ODP). If you use SQL Assistant to connect to Oracle it is strongly advised that you install this provider (from Oracle.com) and use this option whenever you connect to an Oracle system.

Performance

Performance has been improved when returning large numbers of rows. In general it will be much faster if you use Teradata.Net rather than ODBC. (This applies to the data return time only).

For Example. Retrieve 40,000 rows from dbc.columns

Version Teradata.Net ODBC
12.0 n/a 76
13.0 74 124
13.10 30 75
13.10 Edition 2 7 48

Conclusion

Here we have described many small enhancements that should make the application easier to use, and more responsive. I hope this article has made you eager to try the new version which is now available from the patch server (SQL Assistant 13.10.0.2) or on the Teradata Tools and Utilities (TTU) 13.10 Edition 2 Teradata Utility Pak CD.

If you work with Oracle it would be better to upgrade to SQL Assistant 13.10.0.2 (available from the patch server) and install ODP (Oracle .Net Data Provider) from Oracle.com.
This will avoid the many limitations that Microsoft has placed on the use of ODBC with Oracle, in a .Net based application.

If you must use SQL Assistant 13.0 you will need to install the Oracle Client package. (from Oracle.com - latest version is 11.1.7 I think) This package includes ODBC, OLEDB and ODP.

If you do not already have the ODBC Data Source defined you can use either the ODBC Administrator, or the 'Tools > Define Data Source' menu in SQL Assistant, to create one.

You may also need to add a new entry into your tnsnames.ora file. (Your Oracle DBA can provide the required information)

I have 13.0.05 SQL Assistant Version and connecting to Oracle 11G. I have timestamp issue. I understand 13.10 solves this problem. Is there a link to the patch server where I can download this version? Your help is appreciated.

The only way to get to the patch sever is through your Teradata@YourService account. Contact your IT (or Teradata) support folks for more information.

I recently moved from SQL Assistant version 12 to 13.10.0.02 and I am trying to figure out what replaced the "Allowing Use of ODBC SQL Extensions in Queries"option.
Some queries use SQL extentions and are getting Syntax errors like [3706].

I appreciate any help

Now that we use .Net we no longer have the same flexibility with the ODBC API.
SQLA used to override the ODBC DSN setting 'Disable Parsing' so that you could switch it on or off at any time. That is no longer possible so you would need to change the option within the ODBC DSN itself.
Use either the ODBC Administrator or the Tools > Define Data Source menu in SQLA to configure the ODBC DSN. Click on Options and then make sure the 'Disable Parsing' checkbox is not checked.

Thank you, Mike. We are using a different ODBC than Teradata ODBC to access our IBM DB2. I will try to find how to Disable parsing on it. We are using Shadow Direct (NEON Client 32-bit version 6.1.1.1428).

Hi Mike,

I noticed the time to export to Access 2003 has increased significantly however export to Excel takes the same amount of time when I compare version 12 and version 13.10.
Export 20,000 rows 100 bytes used to take 10 seconds in v12 now it'is taking 120s.
Is there a way to get this exporting faster in v13?

I guess I have never compared performance of Export to Access.
I'll take a look at it but I dont think I changed much in the code.
What changed is the underlying Access engine.
We used to use the Microsoft JET dlls - which were small and fast.
However those are no longer supported and can not handle Access 2007 files so I had to switch to the AccessDatabaseEngine ... which pulls in huge chunks of Office.
Based on your performance numbers I think they may be using MSO rather than simple dll functions. That would probably slow it down a lot.
If that's the case then I probably can't do much about it.

I think I just found the problem.
13.0 should work fine. The problem is in 13.10 and 13.11 where all data returns are now performed in a worker thread so that it does not lock up the UI.
This works fine for data that is returned to the Answer window as I load an object completely within the worker thread and then just do one cross thread call to move that data to the UI thread.
In the case of Export to Access however it seems that each row inserted is causing a cross thread call - and that is very slow.
I will fix this in the next efix (13.10.0.6 and 13.11.0.2)

I need to export +300,000 rows to Access. Is there a way to do it? I am connecting to a DB2, by the way.

Hello Mike,

Just getting 13.10.02 installed and testing. First off Thanks, it looks good.

The Database Explorer seems to lock everything up while it is fetching. Is there a work around for this?

MikeDempsey 94 comments Joined 10/06

Currently the data is fetched synchronously so the app will be locked up while it fetches the data.
I recommend using the option to Save the Tree data to disk and also the sub-option to fetch only the column name for views.
(On the DB Tree tab)

The first option means you only need to fetch the data once.
The second makes it 30 times faster when fetching View info.

Thanks, any chance of the synchronous fetch changing in the future?

I do have that on my list of future enhancements, however it may not be for a while and then probably only for the case where it is loading all Tables/Views/Columns for a database. (When it is saving the data to a file)
Loading a single table, or just the Table/View list, is fairly fast anyway.

Is there a way in 13 to set the tab names in your answersets? This way they don't come out 1,2,3,4, etc. the user can make them more descriptive?

You can right click on a tab to display the menu. This allows you to rename or delete that tab.

Is there a way to program it. I run this query each week and would be nice if we could automate it.

Does Teradata V13.1 support running and editing a query in the SAME query window. V12 does support this-- the design my not have been intentional -- but user discovered she could do this and likes the functionality. Wants to know if there is a way to have this same functionality in V13.1 rather than a workaround to "copy and paste" from two query windows. Thank you.

No.
SQLA 13.x uses the current query tab to display progress etc. As a result it can not be edited.
There will be some changes in 14.01 to avoid the problems created by displaying only part of the query when you only run part of it, but the query will still be read only while it is executing.

It works on my sql assistant 13.11.0.04 .

Didn't see it in tools/options/answerset.

There is no trunctaion in SQLA itself.
The only truncation I am aware of was a problem in some versions of the ODBC driver.
The problem was fixed in ODBC 13.0.0.9 and 13.10.0.3.
There is no problen in any version of Teradata.Net.

Hi Guys,

I am working at the IT Support for Hudsons Bay Co. I have a problem with users using the SQLA. They are saying that when they try doing a copy paste the query or coloumn twice it throws an exception and creates a SQLA.error file in Windows 7. Below are the contents of the file, Can some help me out with this:

7/12/2012 1:10:38 PM
SQLA Version: 13.11.0.4
Driver Version: ODBC 13.10.00.07
System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): Unspecified error

at CodeMax4.ICodeMax.Copy()
at AxCodeMax4.AxCodeMax.Copy()
at Teradata.SQLA.QueryFrm.Copy() in F:\ttu1311_efix_snap\tdcli\qman\sqla\QueryFrm.vb:line 158
at Teradata.SQLA.MainFrm.ToolbarMgr_ToolClick(Object sender, ToolClickEventArgs e) in F:\ttu1311_efix_snap\tdcli\qman\sqla\MainFrm.vb:line 784

My response:

We have had problems with Copy before - usually related to an invalid version of the cmax40.dll file. I verified that version 13.11.0.4 contains the correct version though.
Please execute 'verify.exe', in the install directory, and send the log file it creates to:
mike.dempsey@teradata.com

Could you also explain what you meant by
'copy paste the query or column twice'

The error file shows that this problem occured many times.

This problem has been fixed. Try upgrading to 13.11.0.6 or 14.01.0.2.

If you don’t want to [or can’t] upgrade then try deleting the file:
C:\Users\gissah\AddData\Roaming\Teradata\SQL Assistant\DBTree.config

It seems that you may have to delete Toolbars.config in addition to DBTree.config in order to solve the "Index out of range" error above.

You can download Teradata Express from Teradata.com but I'm not sure which version is currently available.
I think it is probablt 14.0 rather than 13.0.

The only reason the Cut/Copy/Save buttons should be disabled is if the product was installed in 'Restricted' mode.
This is something your IT people would have to do as part of their install package. If that is the case then you can't get around it - by design.
This would only apply when focus was in the Answerset window. If it was in Query or History then those buttons should be available. If that's not the case then it would seem that something has become corrupted.
The most likely culprit would be the Toolbars.config file. this is located in either:
\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Teradata\SQL Assistant
or
\Program Data\Teradata\SQL Assistant
depending on whether you use XP or Win7.

These errors seem familiar so I'm pretty sure I already fixed the issue.
14.10.0.2 is a rather old version. There have been many efixes issued since then and one of those almost certainly fixes this issue.
Download the latest 14.10 efix [14.10.0.10] from the Teradata Software Server. This is contained within the TTU 14.10.20 suite.
(Or download the latest 15.0 or 15.10 efix - both of which will support Teradata 14.10.)

Thank you for your help .
It's worked after installing the TTU 15.0 .
