Teradata Studio Express 15.00 is now available for download. Teradata Studio Express is an information discovery tool for retrieving and displaying data from your Teradata Database systems. It can be run on multiple operating system platforms, such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX. It is built on top of the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) which allows Teradata Studio Express to benefit from the many high quality Eclipse features available while focusing on value-add for the Teradata Database.
What's New:
- Aster 6.0 Support
Added support for the Aster 6.0 Database and embedded the Aster 6.0 JDBC Driver.
- Aster Smart Loader, Table Load and Export Wizards
Smart Loader, Table Load and Table Export Wizards now support the Aster Database. Users can invoke the load and export wizards from the Data Source Explorer.
- Aster Table Editor
The Studio Express Table Editor has added support for Aster tables. Users can invoke the Table Editor by selecting the table in the Data Source Explorer and choosing the Data>Edit Data option. The Table Editor supports paging and filtering of data for large tables.
- Teradata 15.00 Support
Added support for the Teradata 15.00 Database. This includes support for the 15.00 Teradata grammar in content assist, as well as support for JSON data types. Teradata Studio Express 15.00 has also embedded the Teradata 15.00 JDBC Driver.
- SQL Editor Enhancements
The SQL Editor has been enhanced to provide an Auto-commit toggle, Commit and Rollback toolbar options. This enhancement allows the user to manually manage the "commit" operation on their SQL statements. By default, the Auto-commit option is on. The user can toggle Auto-commit off and manually commit or rollback SQL statements to the database.
Another SQL Editor enhancement is the ability to link a SQL Editor window to a Result Set Viewer window. This allows the user to better manage multiple SQL Editors and Result Set Viewers.
- Disk Cache
Allows large objects, such as CLOBS, BLOBS, JSON, or large text data types to be cached on disk for Export, Load, and Editing.

Hi
I have just started using Teradata Studio (15) and have a question.
Is there a way to make a connection (to Teradata) point directly to an underlaying database, as it is possible within the old Teradata Administrator?
Thanks
Jorgen
Jorgen, You can specify a database to include in the connection URL. This will become your default database.
Hi
I already tried that, but for some reason it is ignored. The TD Studio database entrypoint is still a the toplevel database.
In JDBC Connection Properties I tried to
use the Database Name field
add directly to the connection url (jdbc:teradata://host/database=PROJEKTER), leaving the Database Name field empty
The Test Connection succed, but the result is the same, I guess it is overwritten.
We have a hierarchy of databases. Our TD version is 13.10
The Root Database field in TD administrator (14.10) has not problems with this.
BTW. Is it possible to attach documents to this type of conversation?
Screendumps or parts of it , is a great awy to cummunicate.
Jørgen
Jorgen, Setting the default database does not change the Data Source Explorer tree root that is displayed. To change the databases that are displayed, you can add a filter to the Databases folder or change the Data Source Explorer Load options in the Preferences.
I tried to filter.
When I check the "Selection" checkbox in the filter dialog window, it runs forever. Tried this both on XP and Windows 7. Same result.
I can send you the screen dump of the debug information box, that comes up, when I kill the TD Studio process.
Hi, i am new in teradata, i tried to installl teradata express but there are a problem when i will execute it , the windows is closed and i can´t work in aplication.
Jorgen, It can take a long time to get the list of databases and users if the list is large. Try first to change the display to not show hierarchical. Go to Window>Preferences?Teradata Datatools Preferences>Data Source Explorer Load Preferences and uncheck the 'Show Databases and Users in Hierarchical Display'
Francisco, Are you trying to install Teradata Express or Teradata Studio Express? These are two different products.
Thanks that helped a lot.
When I cannot have default dabase with hierarchy like in TD Administrator, this is okay.
But I guess it will take some time to get rid of the Administrator :-)
java version "1.7.0_51"
the version of jre is higher than the version of request(1.6)
then install process couldn't finish
@gd186007, Are you installing on Windows or Mac? We have seen a problem with that specific version of the Windows JRE (1.7.0_51) where the PATH is not updated with the location of the JRE bin directory. Does the java -version command return the correct version of the JRE? If not, can you update the PATH to include your JRE bin directory?
Hello, the mac version of the download for Teradata studio 15 does not have the collect statistics, Data Compare or the Smart loader wizard. Is this by design or am I missing something?
The tool only contains Administrator, Query Development and Data Transfer.
Appreciate your help.
Madhukar, The menu options on the new Teradata Studio 15.00 have moved a bit. The Collect Statistics is associated with the Teradata Administrator perspective. Choose that perspective, then locate the table or column to collect stats on, right click and open the Teradata>Statitics menu option. The Compare object dialog was replaced with the Compare With Wizard. Compare With menu option is provided for all three perspectives. Choose the object, right click and choose Teradata>Compare With. The Smart Loader is associated with the Data Transfer perspective. Choose that perspective. Then locate the database or schema (if Aster) and right click on the Tables folder. Choose the Teradata (or Aster)>Data Transfer menu option. Choose the Source as External File (Smart Loader). Sorry for the confusion. We hope the new perspectives make it easier to navigate the UI and focus on certain tasks.
Is there a version that runs on MAC OSx 10.9 (Mavericks). All I see are downloads compatible up to 10.8.
Thanks,
Nicole
Nicole, we have not certified on Mac OSX 10.9. We are currently working on getting this certified.
Hi Francine,
I'm using TD-Studio on different Systems (Customer/my Laptop). Is there an easy way to move the custom Keys from one system to another system?
Kind regards
Harald
Harald, Any custom key bindings would be stored in your workspace. Can you maintain the same workspace between the two systems?
I am using this on a mac OSx 10.9 without any issues. My only complaint is that it is very slow in its response as compared to SQL assistant/Teradata Administrator. Maybe that is why it is not certified for 10.9 and not to be used on 10.9.
Is there any option where I can provide a default database and not have to browse through the entire database hierarchy every single time? Does the tool execute queries against the dictionary every time we browse through the hierarchy or is it cached locally and consumed from there?
@Madhukar, We have not begun testing on Mac OSX 10.9. Is the slow response time you are seeing in scrolling?
Also, you can filter the list of databases or choose Data Source Explorer Load Preferences (in Window>Preferences>Teradata Datatools Preferences) to minimize the list.
Queries are executed to obtain the metadata and create the objects. Once created, they are cached. Object are created from browsing the Data Source Explorer or opening the object in the Object Viewer or via the dialogs when requesting objects.
Francine, thank you for your response. Login as well as the overall experience is slower as compared to SQL Assistant and Teradata Administrator.
Is there a custom filter that I can specify to only load a single database or databases below a single hierarchy?
I see a limitation in the current options provided and was hoping we can have a custom filter where we only load what we want.
Thank you
@Madhukar, If you right click on the Databases folder and choose Filter you can select the database you want. Uncheck the 'disable filter' and select the database you want to load in the DSE. If you have a large number of databases and user, change the DSE Load Preference to uncheck the 'Show databases and users in hierarchical display'.
Hello,
I tried to do a fast load through TD studio express, I am able to succesfully load data up until 5 million records. But anything above 5 million, it is giving no errors.. All I see is an error box with no description.
Thanks!
PV
Another observation, A file with 6M records, doing Prod copy to test env. I am able to load it through 15 but not through 14. Again, error with no error description. Blank Dialogue box comes up with a close button. Thats it.
@AB75151, Just to clarify, the blank dialog box appears with version 14 but not 15? Was the 5 million load also tried on version 14 or 15?
I have encountered a formatting issue when copying and pasting blocks of text from TD Studio into MS Word.
When you highlight text in TD Studio and paste it into Word the entire block of text remains highlighted and the actual text is blocked and cannot be seen. The only option is to paste it in as plain text and lose the benefit of viewing the code with color formatting of the SQL statements.
The solution is to do an additional step to first copy the text into SQL Assistant and then recopy and paste it into Word. When you hightlight text in SQLAssistant and paste it into Word it will copy the color formatted text without any background coloring to show the text block was highlighted.
Can you add this as a bug fix for a future release to simplify the copy/paste process out of studio and into Word.
Jan, I think the problem is that the text is highlighted so when it is pasted into Word, it is obscured. Try turning off the 'Highlight current line' option in the preferences. This option is located under General>Editors>Text Editors page. Uncheck the option.
In the editor, highlighting a string of text (be it a field name, table name for example) and having all occurrences that are the same be highlighted as well. This is extremely useful to me for development and debugging SQL code.
Teradata Studio may have this already, if so where is it, if not is there a plug in or any additonal suggestion(s)?
Is there a way to have Teradata Studio automatically check for updates and then prompt for download/install like on other applications? I checked under the "Help" menu where I usually see this function but did not see it there.
@Qw3ry1on1, Take a look at the Syntax Coloring preferences under Window>Preferences then go to Data Management>SQL Development>SQL Editor>Syntax Coloring for current options for coloring words in the SQL Editor.
@Martie, There is not a current option for automatically checking for updates within Studio. But if you install Eclipse and our Teradata Plug-in for Eclipse you can set up automatic updates through the Preferences>Install/Updates. Most of the input from our Studio customers is that they want to control updates. But I will add this to our list of future Studio features.
I am trying to download this on my MAC but keep getting an error when it gets to the Validating Files part. On the Install Teradata Studio Express screen it says: "The installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assisstance."
Any help getting this installed would be helpful.
Thanks,
Nicole
Nicole, Which version of Mac OSX? Do you have the Apple JRE 1.6 installed?
OSX 10.9.3 and yes I do have JRE 1.6 installed
Nicole, We have not certified with Mac OSX 10.9.
Hi Francine,
Is there any way to get password from TD wallet in TD Studio 15.0? If not, will it be included in future versions?
Thanks,
Gyanendra
We currently do not have support for Teradata Wallet but it is planned for future release.
Don't we have a teradata tool ,which has inbuilt C/C++/VC++ compilers to executes the Stored procedures?.. Thanks..
Kurmarao, With Teradata Studio or Studio Express, you can execute (Run... menu option) C/C++/VC++ stored procedures. But we don't include compilers for C/C++/VC++. You must build them and load outside the tool. That functionality is on our list of future features but currently low priority.
We do provide tools to help build and load Java stored procedures as part of our Teradata Plugin for Eclipse product.
Do we have a step by step guid of installation including creation of seting up dbc database.
I have installed Teradata express 15. Now i need to install the utilities. Do let me know how do i go about it
Thansk
Raja Banerjee
Raja, This article is for Teradata Studio Express, which is a client tool for connecting to Teradata Database (or Teradata Express). Please post your question to the Cloud Computing Forum (http://forums.teradata.com/forum/cloud-computing).
Hi Francine, I just upgraded to Studio Express 15 and it seems more than half the time a few minutes after starting, typing in the SQL editor feels like it's on time delay. It's almost unusably slow. I'm on Mac OS 10.9.4, Macbook Pro with 16GB Ram, connecting to a TD 14.10 instance. I've already modified the Eclipse memory settings to no effect (see below). Any ideas? Any way to downgrade to 14.10? Thx!
-Xms1024m
-Xmx1024m
-XX:MaxPermSize=1024m
Claus, If you are having a delay when typing in SQL Editor, you can try turning off code assist. Go to the Tools menu and untoggle the Code Assist Autoactivation option. Code assist is gathering information about next possible word in SQL statement. If you have a lot of databases it can cause delay.
Hi Francine,
I have found an issue in this release 15.00 which didn't happen in previous ones. When I drag a list of columns in a table from the "Data Source Explorer" tree to the editor, the comma, which should be between columns, is misplaced following the qualifier of the table.
E.g.:
ALMHECAMORTIZATIONMES_V.FECHAREGISTRO_MDALMHECAMORTIZATIONMES_V., POSITIONID_ID....
Notice the table name is ALMHECAMORTIZATIONMES_V and the result is messy.
This issue is solved by unchecking "Qualify names for drag and drop in SQL Editor" but I need this option on beacuse 2 reasons: first, I work with a lot of distinct databases; and, second, I am used to qualify the columns in SQL with the name of its table/view
Thanks,
Luis
Hello;
I am going through several troubles with Parameters in the Sql Editor:
1) Although I use "named parameters" and I reuse the same parameter in several places of a query, the dialog window asks me an independent value for each use in the same query (then, why using named parameters instead of the simple question mark?).
2) I don't find in help topics the file format to specify parameter values "from file" (the dialog window for configuring parameters).
Regards,
Luis
Luis, We have fixed these issues, drag and drop names and having to repeat named parameters in the Configure Parameters dialog. The 'From File' option for Configure Parameters allows you to specify a file that contains the value for that column. We will enhance the Help to describe this option.
Hi Fran, I need your help. I must be dense - I cannot find in Teradata Studio 15 where to change the colors of SQL keywords in the SQL Editor. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks!
David, Go to Window>Preferences>Data Management>SQL Development>SQL Editor>Syntax Coloring. You can also type in a 'filter text' into the Preferences box, such as the word 'coloring' to search for the preference page.
Awesome! Thanks!
Next question - I'm getting an error when trying to run the SQL Formatter. The error text is "SQL Formatter Exception occurred. See error log for more details". Where would the log file that it references be?
David, Typically a formatter problem occurs because the SQL fails the Parser. If there is red squiggly in the SQL then there are parser errors. Make sure you have the correct connection profile selected in the SQL Editor. You can show the Error Log view (WIndow>Show View>Other>Error Log) or logs are stored in the workspace directory (in the .metadata/.log and .metadata/Teradata/teradata.log).
Hi Francine,
Excuse me if this question has been answered before, but I couldn't find any reference to my problem.
Please, which are the SELECT access rights a Teradata user needs on DBC specific views of the Data Dictionary in order to display complete information on the Data Source Explorer?
I've tried to grant SELECT on DBC.TablesV, DBC.ColumnsV and DBC.IndicesV, without success, I guess I may be missing one or more additional views.
It works well if I grant access to the complete DBC to our end users, but our security officers don't authorize this, as a user could be accessing information considered sensitive, DBQL views for instance.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards.
- Jorge
Jorge, By default, Studio and Studio Express will use the 'V' views when accessing the Teradata Data Dictionary for information about the database objects. You can change it to use the 'VX' views in the Teradata Datatools Preferences page for more secure access. Note that the queries take a bit longer with the 'VX' views. To change to the 'VX' views, go to the Windows>Preferences, then the Teradata Datatools Preferences page.
Thanks so much for your prompt reply, Francine.
By trial&error I've found I was missing DBC.DatabasesV in my previous list (of course!)
So SELECT access right for the following Data Dictionary views must be granted to the end users in order Data Source Explorer trees can be populated by Studio Express:
DBC.DatabasesV, DBC.TablesV, DBC.ColumnsV, and DBC.IndicesV
Thank you
- Jorge
I'm looking for information on the parameters "TeradataStudio.exe -data" switch. Studio Help file does not have any information on it's use.
Kenneth, Sorry about the missing Help information. It is in the Installation Guide (under Changing the Workspace Directory Location section), but will add to Help as well.
Changing the Workspace Directory Location on Windows Systems
Modify the shortcut that launches the program to change the workspace directory location.
1. Right click the Teradata Studio shortcut on the desktop and select Properties.
2. Add the –data option and new location for the workspace to the end of the Target field:-data workspaceLocation.
Changing the Workspace Directory Location on Linux Systems
1. Specify the new directory in the command line program execution string as shown in
the following example:./opt/teradata/TeradataStudio/TeradataStudio –data /home/guestUser/MyWorkspace
Changing the Workspace Directory Location on Mac Systems
1 Open the Terminal application.
2 Specify the new directory in the command line program execution string as shown in
the following example:/Applications/TeradataStudio/Teradata/Studio.app/Contents/MacOS/TeradataStudio –data /Users/guestUser/Documents/MyWorkspace.
Francine,
Thx., for the help.
Ken
I use to have a viewer where I could monitor running queries and cancel them if needed. I no longer see the viewer and I can't find it in HELP. How can I activate the viewer again and what is it called?
James Benjamin
James, The running queries can be monitored in the Progress Monitor view. To open this view, click on the Window toolbar>choose Show View>Other... Then choose General>Progress. The executing SQL is shown and can be canceled by clicking the red box cancel icon.
You may have clicked the option to Run in Background for executing SQL.
Francine - I see the package comes with uninstall_TTU.vbs. Nice. However the /SUITES:ALL option fails due to missing file :
.\TTU\TTUSuiteSilent.exe
Would you expect this to work for TTUExpress ?
Neil Corin
Neil, Teradata Studio Express is not installed as part of the TTU package. It is a separate download from Teradata Developer Download site or the Teradata patch server.
Francine - I'm still using SQL Assistant Java Edition 13.01, mainly because of the way the SQL Results window works, in that I can see the history of all queries I've run and bring up the results of these queries without having to re-execute them. I couldn't figure out a way to match this functionality in subsequent versions, but is it available in the latest version of Studio Express?
David, The later versions use our own Result Set Viewer which does not persist the result set data. You would have to export the result set data manually.
Thanks for the quick response Francine. Are there any plans for the Result Set Viewer to persist the result set data in future versions of Studio Express?
David, No plans currently. But we are working on an Export Mode feature that allows you to export result sets directly to an external file, bipassing display. Another option for you may be to create a Generic JDBC connection profile and specify Teradata JDBC driver. This will use the Eclipse DTP Result Set Viewer that persists result sets. But it will not recognize the connection as Teradata and you will lose any Teradata features that we have added.
How do I install/configure the Aster Database Cloud Edition on AWS EC2?
@RxPREDICT, Try asking your question to the Aster or Database Forum.
Hi,
We are not able to see the Administrator option in the Teradata Express Studio. Could you please let us know if we are missing to install anything?
Thank you,
Anil R. Athalye
Anil, Teradata Studio Express does not contain the Administrator perspective or features. You need to install the Teradata Studio product.
Hi,
Thank you very much for your guidance.
Also I get Row size overflow error mentioned below when I execute query that has many columns in the projection. For example, "SELECT a.*, b.sqltextinfo FROM dbc.dbqlogtb a join b.dbqlsqltbl b ON...... WHERE .............. etc." ?
"Executed as Single statement. Failed [9804 : HY000] Response Row size or Constant Row size overflow. Elapsed time = 00:00:01.544"
I tried a couple of options from 'Result Set Viewer Preferences' but found no luck.
Thank you once again for the help.
Anil R. Athalye
Anil, In the JDBC Property, you could try changing the CHARSET to ASCII or UTF16. Also the JDBC property TMODE=ANSI, you could try TMODE=TERA where TRIM functions execute a bit differently.
Hi,
Thank you very much. It worked.
Anil R. Athalye
When connecting to an Aster 6.0 database with Teradata Studio 15.00.02 the option to execute multiple statements is not present.
If you connect to a Teradata database it exists.
In our scenario we have 2 SQL statements. The first one is designed to fail and we want the second statement to execute anyway. On Aster it doesn't and on a Teradata database it does. The SQL are specific to each database environment.
Is it possible to enable this feature for an Aster database. It used to exist in the 14.00.00 version.
John, Are you executing DDL statements or SELECT queries? Are you doing transactions with manual commits?
The Execute All option allows you to send mulitple statements to Teradata. The option is not provided for Aster because according to Aster JDBC documentation: "In the Statement object, you must pass a single query, not multiple queries strung together with semicolons." With Teradata, the Execute All returns a group of result sets.
With Aster, you can still have multiple queries in the SQL Editor and Execute as Individual Statements. If the first one fails, it will prompt you to continue.
They are multiple select statements. The example that was shown to me didn't receive a prompt after the first statement failed. Is there a configuration item that we missed?
I created an item in the Studio Forum so we can just continue the discussion there since it looks like that might be a more appropriate place to do it.
How can I select a rectangular block of text? In SQL-Assistant this is possible using ALT+SHIFT or simply ALT+mouse click, but I cannot find any such option here. It is very useful when writing to multiple rows at the same time.
Thanks a lot.
Milan, In the SQL Editor, SHIFT+ALT+A will enable Rectangular block selection.
Thank you Francine, you made my day ;)
Francine, is it possible to migrate/convert the "Query Builder" SQL templates defined in "SQL Assistant" (stored in *.qbs files) into TD Studio templates xml-Files?
Thx, Tom
Tom, We located the .syn file in the install directory which looks like it contains some of the SQL Assistant SQL templates but not all of them. At this point, I'm not sure how you would do the conversion to XML. Currently, XML is the only format for importing templates into Studio.
How to Install Teradata Studio Express or Teradata Client On Ubuntu ??
@angga, Ubuntu is not one of the supported Linux platforms for Teradata Studio Express. We support Red Hat and SUSE. I am not sure why it won't work or problems that might occur. But our Linux install instructions are on the Teradata Studio Express download page.
It's taking 3-5 minutes to get Studio Express to connect to my database(s) on my Mac. I've taken some of the steps above (unclicking hierarchies etc) and it's not helping. By comparison purposes, when I was on a Windows machine with TD SQL Assistant, it took 3-5 seconds.
Any ideas?
@kcittti, Studio Express is using JDBC to connect to Teradata. Are you using .Net or ODBC with SQL Assistant?
Yes, I was using ODBC before. Are you saying JDBC is slower?
@kcitti, No. I am wondering if you are running into network issues rather than driver performance issues.
Is there a TTUSuiteSilent.exe for version 15.0? I have one for 14.10 can that one be used and if so does it need a different UUID?
@Geneo, Please post your question to the Tools Forum. On Developer Exchange, go to top right hand shows Forums link. thanks
