We are pleased to announce the GCA of Teradata Multi-System Manager 13.10, available January 23, 2011. This is our third major release of Teradata MSM.

Teradata Multi-System Manager is an application that provides a powerful and simple to use approach for monitoring, administration, and control of single- and multi-system environments. 

The Teradata Multi-System Manager product monitors and controls critical applications in both single- and multi-system Teradata environments. It is an event-driven solution that monitors operations, generates alerts, and pushes those mission-critical application alerts to operations staff, DBAs, and other subscribed EDW Operations staff. Teradata Multi-System Manager requires Teradata Viewpoint to support its portlet user interface.

Below are examples of some of the Teradata Multi-System Manager portlets. 

  • Ecosystem Heath provides a high level status the Teradata Environments being monitored. 
  • Application Health, in a hierarchical format displays the status of the monitored applications and all dependent processes and components. 
  • Process Health shows the status and history of the various processes.  
  • Table heath shows the status of tables on each system including the data freshness and data change (number of rows).  

All three of these can be drilled into and also have a rewind feature. There are also filtering options and options to change filter and reorganize the columns being displayed.




Below, shows an example of when an application, “SimpleSystemApp”, has a process called “LongRunningProcess” that has reached a critical condition. This results in the Process and Condition icons turning red with an exclamation mark.  Moving the mouse over the icon will cause a summary of the problem to be displayed (tooltip).

Teradata Multi-System Manager automates the detection of outages and can switch applications among systems, therefore improving the ability to achieve Recovery Time Objectives (RTO). Teradata Multi-System Manager also reduces Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) by monitoring Service Level Agreements (SLA). The product does this by linking SLAs to threshold settings in MSM which, in turn, generates alerts when the threshold is exceeded.

Teradata Multi-System Manager is targeted for multi-system installations to achieve high availability and disaster recovery. However, the product can also be used in single-system environments.

The key benefits of this product are:

  • Provides customers a unified view of their multi-system EDW environment
  • Provides monitoring of systems, processes, data, and applications including supporting systems such as ETL and BI servers
  • Features simple point-and-click controls to manage state of system wide resources and query routing rules by applications and userid
  • Monitors load jobs and data synchronization status
  • Enables user routing based on application readiness state (data currency and process completion) utilizing Teradata Query Director
  • Provides monitoring of thresholds and reports data and process discrepancies
  • Supports graceful failover and fail back during planned and unplanned outages
  • Supports single system environments as well, providing a complete view of process, application and load status.

Teradata Multi-System Manager is able to provide these benefits by continuously monitoring multiple systems or a single system, generating alerts, and providing operational control of Teradata Query Director. Teradata Multi-System Manager provides automatic registration of resources as events are received. Starting with TTU 13.10 efix 2, the load utilities (with the exception of BTEQ) are instrumented to send Teradata Multi-System Manager events including start of a job, steps, end of job, table and rows impacted.

Teradata Multi-System Manager can also be useful in a single system environment. Single ecosystem monitoring benefits:

  1. Provides single operational view of the Teradata ecosystem and automated controls. The ecosystem includes Teradata systems (all Platform Family supported), supporting servers, and processes
  2. Provides monitoring and alerting on load processes, data currency, exception reporting, exceeding of threshold limits
  3. Provides the ability to group processes together and track dependent processes. For example, for an application, Multi-System Manager can track the application, the load processes and other related processes including the application. This can tell you at any point in time if the application is using current data and running as expected
  4. Provides for an easier migration and implementation for organizations that are planning to move to a dual system environment in the future

The diagram above provides a graphical overview of Teradata Multi-System Manager. This depicts Teradata Multi-System Manager monitoring two systems. Teradata Multi-System Manager monitors all the components in each data center (eco-system). This figure shows the components that can be monitored. Teradata Multi-System Manager is able to provide system and query routing control.

A Teradata Multi-System Manager implementation includes:

  • Teradata Managed Servers
  • Teradata Multi-System Manager Software (preinstalled on the Managed Server), Viewpoint Portlets (installed on Viewpoint server) and client instrumentation tools
  • PS implementation Services to define requirements, design and implement Teradata Multi-System Manager is required

Enhanced Usability – convenience and productivity features

  • One portlet for Process and Unit of Work Health; with filter controls and Rewind function
  • Mass clearing of alerts by date range, application ID, UoW ID, and many other filters
  • Improved administration of data sync rules via “natural language” controls
  • Alerts during a multi-step process are auto-cleared if condition clears by final step
  • Internationalization now fully supported; adding support for table names, process names, resource types
  • Custom report creation and display in report portlet with ability to save, share, and re-run reports.  Multiple chart types are natively supported

Improved Performance – faster, more responsive experience

  • Table Health validations run in parallel on multiple tables
  • Pop-up messages are pre-calculated for fast performance

Additional Automation – more operations handled for you

  • Monitors Teradata Query Director’s readiness state; including start/stop control
  • State changes of Teradata components or tables trigger state changes in processes based on cascading dependencies already defined in TMSM
