 I am getting the above error ... when I am trying load the data into a teradata table from a flat file (.csv); none of the files have values greater than 20 width;

Did you define your delimiter character correctly?

Looks like the file reader did not detect the delimiter character and possibly grabbed the entire first record and tried to apply it to the first column.

yes,The reader takes the all column values as one column value.you need to separate the column values in .csv file
