Move Data does not function Teradata 12

When attempting to use the Move Data functionality after selecting a database and then selecting Move Data, nothing happens, the application freezes up and must be exited by ending the process in Windows
Looking at the logs, I found and error that states the following: com.teradata.jdbc.jdbc_4.util.JDBCException: [Teradata Database] [TeraJDBC 14.00.00.21] [Error 3807] [SQLState 42S02] Object 'DBC.Hw_Event_Log' does not exist.
Based on this, looked at the database and it appears that there is a view in DBC called Hardware_Event_Log that attempts to select from the DBC.Hw_Event_Log, however, it is not in any of our databases or is not viewable to me.
I don't know if this is causing the issue, but wanted to get assistance if anyone might know.
Thanks,
Brett B.

In checking the Teradata 12 system I test with, the Hw_Event_log table is also not there, so I am not sure that is the problem. But can you attach the log file so I can look at the exception stack to see who is trying to access the object?

Brett, It looks like you have caching turned on. Can you delete the cache files (option on the connection properties wizard) and turn off caching and see if that allows the Move Space dialog to come up? Thanks.

Hey Francine; I actually started with caching off and turned it on to see if it may resolve the issue, but no go. I went ahead and turned off caching for the database and still no go. I thought it may be a DNS issues, so created a new connection using the IP address directly, but still, does not function.
Prior to doing this, I cleared out the logs and the logs show no errors as follows:

Brett, So to recap, you are on Windows 32-bit with JRE 1.6. You can bring up Teradata Studio and connect to your Teradata Database, but it hangs when you try the Move Space dialog. Can you browse the objects in the Data Source Explorer, open the Schema folder and its Tables and Views folder for the schema you want to add space to? Can you display those objects in the Teradata View? Can you run any of the other dialogs, like Create Table or Generate DDL on a table in the schema? I am just trying to get a sense of what is causing it to hang. The SQL that is executed for the Move Space is the same SQL we execute for the Data Source Explorer as you open objects.

Correct. Windows 32 on JRE 1.6. I did find another function that does not operate successfully. If I select a schema and then right-click and select Teradata -> Grant Revoke -> Privileges, I get the same exact response where it just times out on me and I have to exit out. Everything else seems to work as I can browse schemas, look at tables and views and click on the various tabs within the schemas that have been selected. I can also create, drop and generate DDL for a table without issue.

Brett, Another thought is to point your Teradata Studio to a clean workspace. You will have to create the connection profile again. Create a new workspace folder and call it tempworkspace. Then, exit Teradata Studio and bring up again with the -data option and provide the path to the new workspace folder. For example, -data C:\temp\tempworkspace.  Let me know if that helps.

Hi Francine;

Ok, I attempted repoint to a new workspace and recreated the datasource and attempted to run the Move Space function with the same result.
To troubleshoot, I created a new user in the database with the same privileges and then output the queries that hit the database from the querylog as shown below. The only one I had an issue with running was the fourth query down where it is looking for a parameter "?"; I replaced the parameter with a value and it works.

SQL_TEXT
- select * from DBC.Database_Default_JournalsV (22 Rows)
- HELP SESSION (1 Row)
- SELECT DatabaseName FROM dbc.DatabasesV ORDER BY 1 (27,727 Rows)
- Lock DBC.DiskSpaceV for Access SELECT TRIM(TRAILING FROM DataBaseName) AS Name, SUM(CurrentPerm) AS CurrentPerm, SUM(MaxPerm) AS MaxPerm, SUM(PeakPerm) AS PeakPerm FROM DBC.DiskSpaceV WHERE DataBaseName = ? GROUP BY DataBaseName ORDER BY DataBaseName
- SELECT TRIM(InfoData) as InfoData FROM DBC.DBCInfo WHERE InfoKey = 'LANGUAGE SUPPORT MODE' (1 Row)
- Lock DBC.DiskSpaceV for Access SELECT TRIM(TRAILING FROM DataBaseName) AS Name, SUM(CurrentPerm) AS CurrentPerm, SUM(MaxPerm) AS MaxPerm, SUM(PeakPerm) AS PeakPerm FROM DBC.DiskSpaceV WHERE DataBaseName = 'USERNAME2' GROUP BY DataBaseName ORDER BY DataBaseName (1 Row)
- SELECT DatabaseName, TRIM (CommentString) AS CommentString, TRIM(TRAILING FROM DBKind) AS DBKind, CreatorName, AccessCount, LastAccessTimeStamp, OwnerName, AccountName, ProtectionType, PermSpace, TempSpace, SpoolSpace, JournalFlag FROM DBC.DATABASESV  ORDER BY DatabaseName (27,727 Rows)

My guess is that it is using the last query to build the Move Space dialog box, which returns successfully; however, I am wondering if it is a setting in the tool that is causing it to timeout.

Well, after letting it sit there for a good 20 minutes, the dialog finally pops us and allows me to move space. Any thoughts on how to get this to speed up would be great as it is hardly usable being this slow when Teradata Administrator comes back immediatly.

You can try creating a filter on the Schemas folder (right click and choose Properties. Uncheck the disable filter option to create a filter) to limit the number of database is it trying to load and search. The Filter will create a LIKE clause on the query.

Afternoon Francine;

I applied the filter and it worked for my schemas that are displayed in the Datasource List, but the filter does not apply to the Move Space dialog. The Move Space dialog still attempts to load all schemas from the database. Understand also, that the query is not the issue as it returns in under a minute for all databases.

The problem is the way the Move Space dialog is coded as it attempts to pre-load all (27000 rows) space information for every database into the dialog. A better option here would be to only pull the space information after the database TO/FROM are selected or to apply the filter that has been set for the schema, which I would expect would significantly decrease the dialog load time.

Do you have any other ideas that may increase the speed?

The Move Space does get the entire list of databases (which we will fix and only get what is displayed) but it only gets the space information for the selected database.

Hmm;

Then something isn't making sense as far as what is taking so long to build the dialog. My schema list refreshes and shows all databases under a minute when unfiltered in the Data Sources list, but something in the Move Space dialog is taking a significant amount of memory and time to build the dialog box, which I can see based on performance monitor while looking at the Teradata Studio process.

Francine;
Do you know when the next update will be release to address this?

Brett, I have opened a JIRA issue for the Move Space dialog to use the current (and possibly filtered Databases list). I hope that addresses the performance issue. Our next release is currently planned for August timeframe.
