'Long Text Boundary Size' - not what is expected

Hi,

I've just got TS working (finally) and have come across the following which I think is a bug.
In "Preferences / Result Set Preferences" one option is 'Long Text Boundary Size', default of 150.
The help for this says 'Enter the boundary size for display of long text values. Zero (0) indicates no truncation will occur.'
But if you set the value to 0 then all columns are displayed as "...".
Note that I've said all columns, this seems to apply to numeric columns as well. From the help text above I'd assumed it only applied to character columns.
Is this what is meant to happen?
According to the splash screen I'm using TS 15.0.1, but the 'installation details' show 15.00.00.201407291521.
Cheers,
Dave

Dave, It is meant to apply to numeric fields as well. But appears that the 0 value is not applying no truncation. I am not sure that no truncation is a good idea since string values can be very long. We will fix the hover text.

Hi Francine,
Thanks for the info but I have to say that I'm confused.
I'm assuming that the reasoning behind having a truncate capability is to prevent displaying very long values, that makes perfect sense to me.
But you seem to be saying that the hover text is incorrect.  Does this mean that a value of 0 means exactly that? i.e. you will have an option which displays 0 characters - that doesn't make sense to me.
Also, the maximum length of a numeric value in current releases of Teradata is 38 digits. This should not be too long for most people so I wouldn't expect a truncation option to apply to numeric values.
Finally, even if there are very long character columns (and I agree with you, there can be some very long ones), I'd have thought that the amount of text to be displayed is up to the user. I understand about products trying to guide the user away from stupid choices, but this is one area where I think a product can only guide, not dictate.
Cheers,
Dave

Dave, Yes, the tooltip text is incorrect and will be fixed. Displaying column data larger than even 50 characters is probably not practical. So having an unlimited display does not make sense. Yes, we are trying to prevent a bad situation. A column of 38 digits can also be too big to show in full, especiallly when I have a lot of columns to display.
