How Do You Create A Teradata Database?

I downloaded Teradata Studio Express 14.00. I run it through VMware on a 64 bit machine. Although its setup I can't seem to find and connect to a Teradata database. Is there a database downloaded with the package. I got this out of td-ttu-14.10-for_windows.zip. I have to say the VM is very clunky and slow. I miss the old TD 12.00 version. Faster without the complexity.

Teradata Express is the database VM. Teradata Studio [Express] is the newer multi-platform Eclipse-based client tool. The TTU package contains the drivers, utilities, and "legacy" client tools for Windows. Those are three separate downloads.

OK. So I have Teradata Studio Express 14.10 set up and running and I can see the legacy tools. I can also see the 64 bit driver icons so their downloaded. It would seem I have everything.  So how do I create a test teradata database and a test table? Also how do I connect Teradata SQL assist to the database?

@newb1, Bring up Teradata Studio Express and start by creating a connection profile to your Teradata Express system. You can create a database by running the CREATE DATABASE DDL commands. Refer to the Teradata documenation on the syntax for the SQL DDL commands. If you download and install Teradata Studio, an administrative tool (available on the Download site), it contains dialogs to help you create databases and tables.
SQL Assistant is a Windows only product that uses ODBC or .NET to connect to Teradata.

The important part of the exception message is: UnknownHostException: testDatabase

which means that you specified "testDatabase" as your Teradata Database hostname, which is not correct.

Instead, you must specify the actual DNS hostname of your Teradata Database.

Is there a well written guide to creating a teradata database and a connection through Teradata Studio Express ? I'm getting more confused. It shouldn't be this difficult to create a database and connect to it. I'm really beginning to dislike Teradata Studio Express and the vitual machine approach! Its not very intuitive!

@newb1, Do you have Teradata Express (the Teradata VM) up and running with the Teradata Database up? Teradata Express has Teradata Studio Express installed inside the VM. Can you bring up Teradata Studio Express inside the VM?

Josko, You want to enter the Teradata Database Server name or IP address for the Database Server Name field. The error message indicates that the host name 'test' does not exist. Is the name 'test' in your DNS? Can you try the IP address?

Zohaib, Where is Teadata running versus Studio Express? If Teradata is running inside a VM on your machine and Studio Express is running outside the VM, you need the IP address of the VM. Or are you running Teradata Studio Express inside the Teradata Express VM, then 127.0.0.1 should work.

Hi there.
I want to practice some Teradata SQL statements, nothing too grand. Downloaded Terdata Studio Express, is there a small DB I can d/l and connect to.
(I tried downloading Terdata for VM ware but I have issues with getting VM ware to work and the page for teradata all list Linux as the OS and so I'm not bothering with that.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Teradata Express is your only option for small Teradata test system.

Could I use this to create a connection from Express Studio to AdventureWorks DB?

As per your article: http://developer.teradata.com/tools/articles/transitioning-from-sql-assistant-to-studio-express

Has anyone tried this - what drivers etc do I need to download?

Julio, Studio Express includes an option for a Generic JDBC connection but you would need to download a JDBC driver for your database you are connection to. It also needs to support the JDBC APIs.

Jairam,
Studio Express is a tool for connecting to Teradata, it isn't a Teradata system. Since you've tried connecting to addresses such as "TEST", "LOCALHOST" and your own IP address as the location of the Teradata system I'm guessing you're expecting a Teradata system to be on your system.
If you are trying to connect to a system that isn't running a Teradata system, such as with Teradata Express (see: http://downloads.teradata.com/download/database/teradata-express-for-vmware-player), the "Connection Refused" exception is what you'll see (since there isn't a Teradata system there to respond).

I want to connect to teradata system from my datastage using teradata connector. So is there any other process to use my own system as teradata system other than vmware.

Jairam, The other option is running Teradata with Amazon EC2. The download link is http://downloads.teradata.com/download/database/teradata-express/amazon-ec2.

I have installed only teradata studio and would like to create teradata database. But it shows same error "connection refused" while creating teradata database .
Do i need to install another teradata setup??

Surbhi, I was able to recreate the 'Connection refused' error by giving an invalid port number for my Teradata Server. The default port is 1025. Have you changed the port number or should it be changed?

Hi I thought I'd try to instal this again as the last time I gave up after it failed. I am currently running windows 10. I have downloaded TDE 14.00.03.02 for VMware (4GB) which VM ware player should I instal? How and where do I set up TD Studio express from?

@newb1, Please post your Teradata VM question to "Teradata Database on VM" forum. As for Studio Express, you can download it from the Developer Exchange Download page.

Hi, I am new user of Teradata Express VMware. I have been able to create a database connection using the default Teradata JDBC connection properties i.e. User Name/Domain: dbc Password: dbc How can I create my own username and password? I basically want to create a new database, user and tables.

Aniket, You will need to first login as an administrator and create a new user in Teradata. Please refer to the Teradata documentation for the CREATE USER statement syntax.
