Senior Distributed Database Engineer (Teradata)New York, NY -- Reputable, Financial Institution.This position requires a senior level, hands-on database engineer. The ideal candidate will have a diverse background in database technologies and the architecture, design, development and optimization of large scale database implementations. The candidate will have a firm grasp of the various database architectures for Data Warehouse databases and be able to identify and select architectural approaches that support high levels of availability, scalability, data integrity and performance. In particular, the candidate will demonstrate high levels of expertise in the physical modeling, database design and performance optimization of highly normalized centralized data warehouse architectures.The candidate will possess an ‘end-to-end’ understanding of data management, enabling an appreciation of the infrastructure impact of database design decisions. Additionally, the candidate will have a breadth of experience working with application architects and engineers to optimize application data access methods. The candidate must possess the excellent communication and presentation skills that are required for socializing technical concepts and building consensus, as well as excellent problem-solving and teaming skills. Responsibilities:· Perform hands-on database engineering tasks in the development of complex, large-scale, (multi-terabyte size) MPP data warehouse databases· Perform hands-on database engineering tasks in the development of data mart databases· Perform capacity planning activities as related to database storage, CPU, memory and network utilization· Optimize the database environments with respect to data access methods, access performance, storage, data integrity, system performance and system availability · Work closely with data modelers to assist with the conversion of logical models to physical models· Work closely with data warehouse developers to optimize for, and efficiently integrate with Informatica ETL platform· Work closely with BI developers to optimize access with tools such as Brio, Business objects, and Hyperion · Work closely with application developers to optimize data access and integrate the database platforms with application server environments· Work closely with the technical infrastructure staff to optimize and integrate the database platforms with the storage subsystems · Develop stored procedures and shell scripts to automate data feeds from the source systems into the data warehouse· Liaise with database vendors and external support on issues such as upgrades, technical problems and solutions · Develop and test database backup, restore and disaster recovery plans and procedures· Provide technical support to developers in the development of stored procedures/triggers/functions.· Document database environments and processesRequired Skills and Experience:· 7+ years with Teradata RDBMS with extensive current experience on v2R6· 5+ years of solid relational database administration and engineering on MPP database systems· 2+ years experience with Informatica encompassing versions 5.x, 6.x and 7.x· Excellent experience with clustering technologies for performance and availability· Proven experience in designing and configuring databases that scale in the terabyte range· Excellent experience analyzing columns for multi value compression potential· Deep knowledge of Teradata RDBMS architecture components including PEs, AMPs and BYNET· Excellent experience with data loading utilities· Expert performance tuning skills for large MPP and non-partitioned databases· Excellent understanding of the effects of normalization and denormalization on data integrity and performance· Excellent SQL coding skills · Expert in the use of Teradata data access drivers (ODBC, JDBC, OLE DB, Mainframe, CLI)· Proficient in UNIX scripting using Korn Shell, sed, awk and Perl· Solid understanding of dimensional data modeling, star and snowflake schemas· Database administration, including but not limited to:o Installation and configuration of Teradata Managero Managing AWSo Monitor and adjust PERM and SPOOL space utilization and requirementso Set up and maintain access rights to the Teradata System database objectso Monitor security logs to identify potential unauthorized access attemptso Create and alter tables, views, macros, and other database objects as requiredo Monitor error logs and take appropriate actiono Set up and maintain users, databases, account passwords, resource limits as requiredo Maintain Client site log to record changes to evento Perform Teradata database integrity validationo Monitor and report on skewing of data among Vprocso Study locking logger reports to identify possible access lockout situationso Maintain Priority Scheduler settings as requiredo Maintain Teradata Query Manager settingso Schedule queries to run as directedo Allow bypass of Teradata Query Manager for special situations as directedo Account management using Teradata WinDDIo Load and unload data using Teradata FastLoad, Teradata MultiLoad, Teradata FastExport, Teradata TPumpo Write Stored Procedures and Macroso Disaster recovery and rollback· Strong mentoring ability· Good experience teaching Teradata to other engineers· Excellent analytical ability, strong consultative and communication skills· Ability to work in a team environment · College degree in computer science/related fields from a recognized university with a strong engineering and/or math pedigree, or equivalent experienceRequired Management Skills:· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as organizational skills · Experience with project management software · Ability to manage multiple high priority projects simultaneouslyHighly Desirable Skills:· 3+ years with DB2 UDB ESE with current experience on v8.2· 2+ years experience with SQL Server with current experience on SQL Server 2000· 1 year+ experience with Telelogic SynergySubmit your confidential resume to:
