Hi All,

I am a new member to this forum.  I am currently working on Mainframe Technology(6 yrs) and looking for a technology change.  Please let me know how to start and what are the advantages/opportunities I would have with this change.

Hi Saheel,

Even I started my career with mainframe but transformed later to ETL projects using Teradata. Currently I am completely into ETL and Warehousing eventhough all the projects made use of mainframe as the major data source. There is a huge advantage for a mainframe professionals as
i)  Major Banking and Insurance company has their majority of the source system data lying in mainframe.

ii) Got an added advantage on decision making with respect to extraction, conversion and transformation.

iii) Hard to find resources atleast on two areas

  a) Source system (Mainframe, UNIX, and database such as Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 ),
  b) Warehouse (Databse such as Teradata  and ETL tools such as Informatica, Abinitio)
  c) Reporting (SAS, Cognos etc).

Most of the Warehouse / BI project flows on the above technology .

iv) Data extraction from mainframe is unique and hard comparing to the extraction from other databases as mainframe is EBCDIC based. Whereas huge projects makes use of Mainframe for handling the large volulme data. Hence mainframe professionals get and added advantage in having their finger prints into huge BI clients and projects

v) Knowledge on Schedulers, Version Control tools and transfer techniques (such as FTP, Connect Direct ) are side dishes for an ETL Specialist.

Hey All,
Even I have the same question. I am mainframe developer with 7yrs exp. I have little work experience on Teradata and I want to shift my Tchnology from Mainframe to Teradata.
I am planning to take training on Teradata and start looking out for change of job. But I am bit confused and I am not sure if I will succeed in my plan.
Need suggestion from people who have successfully done this shift.

If you see the job requirements, (compare Mainframe and Teradata), Teradata has lots of reqts. Teradata connects well with Mainframe, if you look at tools and utilities. If you can get projects using both Teradata and Mainframe, you can take an opportunity to learn Teradata and slowly drift towards Teradata. You can take training too.

Mind you, I don't know mainframe, since you ask suggestion only from people who have done this shift :). It is just my suggestion.

Won't the other company look for experience on teradata while changing the job?
I am also interested in learning teradata and subsequently moving to Teradata from Mainframes. But issues is that my current company does not have any projects on Teradata. Please advise.

Hi Abjain,
Obviously, they will look if it demands Teradata knowledge. But I feel that if you learn the technology and know how to sell and you have good luck too, then you can sail  through effortlessly. Once you are in the job, you can imbibe as much knowledge as possible.
Yes , it is difficult if your org does not have Teradata. If you are trained outside, I suggest that you get a guarranty from the training institute  that  you will be placed somewhere.
It is just my suggestion.
Good luck,
