Following up on the outside influences that will drive EDW growth, Babbage's blog posted an article on the "Internet of Things."  It looks back to the promise of connecting not just all wireless devices to the internet, but everyday objects, “from food, clothing, pills and pets to personal electronics, appliances and cars,” and the current progress along these lines.

A few interesting quotes from the post:  “Over the past three months, America’s two largest wireless carriers, Verizon and AT&T, have added more connected devices (2.6m between them) than human subscribers (1.2m) to their cellular networks. There are still only 20m connected devices in North America, compared with more than 300m mobile subscribers.;” and “Though the amount of information stored in an object’s electronic tag is typically only 128 bits long, that is more than enough for the chip to tell an interrogation device where to find a backup database with megabits more.”

The latter comment is of interest when you do the math.  As mentioned in the article if Jim Zemlin’s, executive director of the Linux Foundation, prediction of two trillion (with a “T”) devices connected to the internet by 2020 comes to be, and we assign 100KB of searchable data per device, then we are looking at an additional 200 petabytes of data to feed industry’s analytical engines.  You’d better get that PDBD design ready to go.
