Teradata Studio Express 14.10 is now available for download. Teradata Studio Express is an information discovery tool for retrieving and displaying data from your Teradata Database systems. It can be run on multiple operating system platforms, such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX. It is built on top of the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) which allows Teradata Studio Express to benefit from the many high quality Eclipse features available while focusing on value-add for the Teradata Database.

What's New:

  • Teradata Database 14.10 and Aster Database 5.10 support
  • Aster Schema Cache

Schema caching provides a mechanism, which stores the selected schemas locally in the format of an XML file. The user is provided with an interface for selecting which schemas to cache. Caching allows for a quicker loading time in comparison to loading the schema from the database each time.

  • Show DSE Tree Hierarchy and Load Preferences

The DSE Tree Hierarchy provides an option to display the databases in the Data Source Explorer in a hierarchical format (the flat format option is still supported as well). This provides a clearer view of relationships between databases and users. This feature also provides a set of preferences to select what to load from the database and what to display in the Data Source Explorer.

  • Teradata SQL Editor

The Teradata SQL Editor provides a mechanism that allows the user to write SQL statements and execute them against a database. The Teradata SQL Editor does not replace the open source SQL Editor but instead provides a more efficient and accessible method of performing the functions. The Teradata SQL Editor includes a connection indicator, a connection profile list, an execute menu, and a save menu.

  • Teradata Data Editor

The Table Data Editor provides an enhanced feature to edit tables within the Data Source Explorer. The data in the editor is broken up into pages, which allows for efficiency in updating large tables. Along with the standard insert, update, and delete, data filtering, sorting, and in-memory filtering are also supported. The user also has the option of exporting to Excel or Text files.

  • XML Data Type

The 14.10 database definition provides the XML data type in addition to existing types.

  • Interface Enhancements

Change Password dialog has been added to allow users to quickly change their password.

  • Smart Loader for Teradata available outside Data Lab

The Smart Loader for Teradata is now available outside of Teradata Data Lab. Users can invoke the Smart Loader by right clicking on the Tables folder for a Database and choose the Smart Load Data option.

Hi.  Love the new version.

It would appear, however, that opening a new Editor has a pull-down list of Connection Profiles that only include Teradata Connections.  I've been unable to figure out how to get it to even allow me to run queries against my Oracle or SQL Server databases.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Sean

@neckers, Select your Oracle or SQL Server connection profile in the Data Source Explorer, then click the Open SQL Editor button in the DSE toolbar. It should open the old SQL Editor with your connection profile.

Unfortunately, selecting the Connection Profile and clicking the Open Editor btton produces a window with the TERADATA connection profile pulldown.

I was able to get the old style Editor if I click on the Database object *under* the connection profile and then click the Open SQL Editor button.

Thanks,
Sean

Dave, It should not be a problem running Eclipse and Teradat Studio on the same machine unless you are sharing  the workspace. By default, Teradata Studio will name the workspace as 'workspace-studio' and by default Eclipse will name the workspace as 'workspace'. So this should not be the problem.
Was there an error in the error logs for Teradata Studio. There are two logs that are both in your workspace-studio directory. One is /.metadata/.log and the other is /.metadata/Teradata/teradata.log.

@ravi, Teradata Studio Express does not include any database data. Maybe your question was for Teradata Express and not Studio? If so, please post to the Cloud Computing Forum.

Is anyone else seeing performance issues with the 14.10 Express compared to the 14.0? I had a JRE upgrade to 1.7 just before upgrading to express 14.10. I've downgraded my JRE back to 1.6, but I'm still having performance issues performing data lab tasks:
Connecting to the database takes significantly longer (minutes) - I see in the right corner a progress bar in the right corner, which I don't remember in v14.01
Selecting the database profile clocks for minutes, as does a refresh within the directory tree.
Using the loader, when I choose my file, the preview takes significantly longer on the scan than before, from seconds in 14.01 to minutes now.
Are there some config options/tuning I should be setting?
The other functions are similarly regressed in performance.
Is there some option

@RFM099, Connecting to the database has not changed so not sure why the performance would be slower. A change was made in the loading of databases, using a hierarchy display. We have fixed an issue where the system had a large number of databases or users, in our 14.10.01 release. Can you try this release and see if the performance improves?

I do have 14.10.01 - I've been looking at the memory allocation for my JRE - I haven't noticed any performance degradation with any of my other java based apps. I may roll back my studio to 14.00 to see if I can return to my original performance.
Thanks!

Hi,
I have been having trouble with the installation. After I install the teradata, When I try to open it, a pop up pops up directing me to a log file. The content of the log shows the below error message.
An error occurred while automatically activating the bundle org.eclipse.core.resources (80).
Not sure on how to proceed further.
Appreciate a help!
Thanks,

My first thought is that there is a bitness issues. Can you verify that you are running either the 32-bit JRE and 32-bit Studio or 64-bit JRE and 64-bit Studio. There may also be a log file in the configuration directory if it failed to launch.

Appreciate your response, I am trying to install this, TeradataStudioExpress_win64_x86.14.10.01.00
Yes in the log file itself, I had the above mentioned error message.
Should you need more info, please lemme know.

Make sure you are running the 64 bit JRE. Look in your TeradataStudioExpress.ini file to see what JRE was chosen during install.

It reads:

-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.6
-Xms256m
-Xmx256m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m
-Djava.util.Arrays.useLegacyMergeSort=true.

And I downloaded the second one from the below site:
https://downloads.teradata.com/download/tools/teradata-studio-express
Lemme know if I am navigating to the right one or I need to download something else. Request you to provide the link in case of the later.

@paroul, Please send me the output from running the java -version command in a DOS window so I can see what version your system will run with.
It should look something like this:
C:\Windows\System32>java -version
java version "1.6.0_20"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode)

Can you try with the current release of JRE 7. Follow this link and grab JRE 7 Download: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/server-jre7-downloads-1931105.html  and give that a try. We have not done any certification with 1.8, which is still early access.  Again make sure you grab the 64-bit version of JRE 7.

Hi,
Thanks a lot I was able to install it. But, now, I landed into another issue. While creating a new connection profile referring the article, I get the error " Could not connect to testServer."
Error creating SQL Model Connection connection to testServer.
The details show Jdk6 for some reference.
Is this now becuase of the JRE 7?

@paroul, The example in the article is just an example. You would replace 'testServer' with the name of your Teradata Database server. If you are testing with Teradata Express, that you downloaded, then use the IP address of your TD Express VM with username dbc and password dbc. Otherwise, use the name of your Teradata Database server.

Hi,
I am sorry, but I did not quiet understand "the IP address of your TD Express VM". I havent installed this on VM, I did it directly on my machine. Is this not right?
"The name of your Teradata Database server" I am not sure if I got this right as well.
Thanks.

@paroul, What is the Teradata Database that you are trying to connect to? Teradata Studio Express is a client tool that allows you to connect to your Teradata Database and run queries. If you do not have a Teradata Database, you can download Teradata Express VM as a sample Teradata Database.

@gd186007, Teradata Studio is a standalone client application or Eclipse RCP. We also provide an Eclipse Plugin called Teradata Plug-in for Eclipse, also available on the DevX download site. The Teradata Plug-in for Eclipse supports Java development with wizards to help create Java SP and Web Services.

It is for SQLA.
I think that there is a text file to enter the message to display once you invoke SQLA icon or logon.
I tried to create startup string at user profile but it will only work with bteq!!

Hi. I have been a big follower of the Express since the first release.
But I have had an issue with the preference "Display 1000 separator in numeric columns" in every release.
In previous releases I got a crash everytime checking the option. However, with the last release (14.10.01), instead of crash, the Result Set Viewer's grid goes to grey: all data disappear; columns and rows remain unchanged, though.
Thanks for your help and keep on the good job!

@nshah54, We are trying to find out why the install is failing on XP. In the meantime, the current workaround is to install silently.:
Open a DOS command window and locate the setup.exe file in your Program Files directory.
Run the setup.exe as follows: <location>/setup.exe /s /v"/qn"

Hi.  Trying to install TeradataStudio 14.10.01 (Windows 32-bit) on a virtual workstation in a secure environment with Java 1.6 already installed.  Java -version returns the following:
java version "1.6.0_45"
Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_45-b06)
Java HotSpot (TM) Client VM (build 20.45-b01, mixed mode)
Cannot get past the "32-bit Java Runtime Environment 1.6 or above is required..." error message.  We have confirmed the path is correct ("C:\Program Files\Java\jre6") and the PATH environment variable is set correctly.  Any help would be appreciated.   Thanks.

What version of java is returned when you execute the command: java -version

You can specify the JRE in the TeradataStudio.ini file as well. The .ini file is located in the install directory. For example,
-vm
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe

The command: java -version returns the following:
java version "1.6.0_45"
Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_45-b06)
Java HotSpot (TM) Client VM (build 20.45-b01, mixed mode)
As for the TeradataStudio.ini file, we never get that far (the install directory never gets created), it won't even continue to run the install because it doesn't seem to recognize the JRE as a supported version.

Hello,
I'm having a similar problem.
I previosuly installed Teradata Studio 14.10 32-bit version and I just uninstalled it and installed Studio Express ver. 14.10, the 64-bit version.
It looked like the installation completed succesfully, but there was no app shortcut created. So I looked for the app in the Program Files and tried to lounch it from there, but I get an error window that directs me to look in a log file that's under .eclipse directory. If I look in that log file, the error says "An error occurred while automatically activating bundle org.eclipse.core.resources (80)."
I'm running JRE 1.7 64-bit version. The output of "java -version returns" is:
java version "1.7.0"
Java SE Runtoime Environment  (build 1.7.0-b147)
Java HotSpot 64-bit Server TM (buld 21.0-b17), mixed mode)

The content of the TeradataStuioExpress.ini in the installation folder is:

-vmargs

-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.6

-Xms256m

-Xmx256m

-XX:MaxPermSize=256m

-Djava.util.Arrays.useLegacyMergeSort=true

Please help. This is very frustrating.

Thank you

Did you install the Teradata Studio Express14.10.01. It should add a line to your ini file that shows the location of the JRE, for example.
-vm
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe

You could try adding the line and restarting Teradata Studio Express.

Hi @fgrimmer, I've noticed Studio Express doesn't recognize volatile tables, i.e. when I create one using the SQL Editor it will never show up under my user name and Tables info on the left Data Source pane, even when I use the Refresh option.
The downside for me is I'm not able to use the convenient Import option to load my volatile tables.
Please, am I correct, or I'm missing something?
Thanks so much in advance, best regards

Jorge, You are correct in that the volatile table will not show up in the DSE. The problem is that we query the Data Dictionary for the list of tables and the volatile table is not returned in the list so we have no way to display it.

Hi fgrimmer,

I downloaded the TDExpress14.10.01_Sles11_40GB, and i was assuming that for compatibilty , i need a free SUSE linux, but then came to know that for above Teradata database free version, do not need a linux installation provided i have a vm player on VM machine provided to me. I read somewhere that TD 14 SLES11 has some compatibility issues with view point, so should i download the TD 14 SLES 10? Please suggest if i m misunderstood somewhere.

Also, does the above database setup comes with view point as , i was thinking to install Teradata 14 viewpoint free setup on another VM machine and then connect. On the view point machine , i was thinking that can work on windows OS, let me know if there is a similar setup for View point itself which has OS inbuilt.

Suman, The Teradata documenation says:
"9804 Response Row size or Constant Row size overflow.
Explanation: The user request generated a response or constant row of data that exceeded internal Teradata database
limitations (presently about 64230 BYTES for a row).
NOTE: Although the size of spool files has been increased to 1 MB, constant rows and response rows still have lower limits. Constant rows are limited to approximately 64k bytes. The response row is limited to two 64k fields generated by the projection list and the order by clause.
Generated By: Parser modules. For Whom: End User.
Remedy: Change the SQL and/or reduce the data field sizes and/or number of fields being returned and resubmit the
request. Limit the projection list and order by clause to approximately 64k bytes of data each."
I hope that is helpful.

Thank you for the response. But I have a requirement to get all the columns data from that table. If I run the same query in Teradata SQL assistant(uses ODBC drivers) works fine. If it is a Internal Teradata database limitations it shouln't work in SQL Assistant right? I think it is a bug in JDBC drivers.

tomnolan 21 comments Joined 01/08

No, not a bug in the Teradata JDBC Driver. That error is from the Teradata Database. It refers to the Teradata Database composing the ResultSet row of data on the server side before it is even transmitted to the Teradata JDBC Driver.

Regarding the difference in behavior when you run the query in SQL Assistant -- there are likely to be differences in your Connection settings between the two applications. In particular, character data occupies more space when using the UTF8 or UTF16 session character set. For example, you may be using the ASCII session character set with SQL Assistant, but using the UTF8 session character set with Teradata Studio, which would explain the difference in size of your ResultSet row data.

Jamuna, Do you have multiple versions of the JRE installed? Are you able to open a Terminal window and run the java -version command? It should return the latest version of Java installed.

Hi Francine;
In TS v14.02.00, within Data Source Explorer, under each data source, I have always been able to configure the 'Schemas' Connection Filter Properties by un-checking 'Disable filter'; selecting the 'Selection' radio button, and under 'Include selected items' placing check-marks on the databases I wanted to see displayed.
In TS v14.10.01, I can no longer configure the 'Schemas' Connection Filter Properties: When I un-check 'Disable filter' and select the 'Selection' radio button, the Windows 'working' icon appears and TS stops responding indefinitely.  Just for yucks, I left TS in this state overnight, the next morning it was still 'working' and non-responsive.
I have tried deleting the 'workspace-studio' folder under my Users directory, and; removing all java versions and installing jre 1.7.0_51, to no avail. It seems like TS v14.10.01 has a problem listing databases(schemas); just trying to display unfiltered Data Sources Schemas can take up to 20 minutes.
For these reasons, I continue to use TS v14.02. I just wanted to let you know about these issues and also see if anyone else has experienced similar problems.
Thanks,
Dave

Dave, I think the issue is with the hierarchy display of your databases and users. Your system must have a very large number of databases and users and it is taking a long time loading this list. If you uncheck the preference to 'Show in Hierarchical display' it will perform as in 14.02. This is new to 14.10.01 and we are aware of the issue and working on fixing this. In the meantime, go to the Window>Preferences>Teradata Datatools Preferences>Data Source Explorer Load Preferences. Uncheck the option 'Show Databases and Users in Hierarchical Display'. Click OK.

Teradata Studio 14.10 is no longer available on the Developer Exchange. If you have access to the Teradata Patch Server, you can download it from there.
