Teradata Studio Express 14.00 (formerly Teradata SQL Assistant Java Edition) is now available for download. Teradata Studio Express is an information discovery tool for retrieving and displaying data from your Teradata Database systems. It can be run on multiple operating system platforms, such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX. It is built on top of the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) which allows Teradata Studio Express to benefit from the many high quality Eclipse features available while focusing on value-add for the Teradata Database.

What's New:

  • Product Re-Branding

Teradata Studio Express has replaced Teradata SQL Assistant Java Edition. Stay tuned for more information on future Teradata Studio Family product offerings.

  • Custom attributes for DBC artifacts

Custom Attributes provides the ability for users to specify additional attributes for objects displayed in the Teradata View. When objects of the type are displayed in the Teradata View, additional tabs containing the attributes’ values will be provided. Single attributes or a collection of attributes are displayed in a table format.

The custom attributes are defined in an XML file that is located in the user's workspace .metadata/Teradata directory. The XML file contains information about the type of object, name, tooltip and icon for the Teradata View’s tab, and the query that will run to retrieve the object’s attributes.

  • History Cleanup Dialog

A Cleanup History dialog has been added to the Teradata SQL History toolbar to help the user clean up the history. The dialog allows the user to specify one or more criteria to match the rows that they wish to delete. They can also select an option to delete all duplicate queries. In order to be considered duplicate, both the data source and the SQL statement must be identical. In deleting duplicates, all except the most recently execute entry will be deleted. The Cleanup Dialog will also allow the user to compact the SQL History database. The compact feature works by freeing up unused allocated space.

  • Import from SQLA History XML files

This feature provides the option to import the SQL Assistant history in XML format. The Teradata SQL History import dialog now provides an option to import a SQL Assistant History (.xml) file.

  • JDBC Property Configuration File

Users have the option to provide a JDBC Property Configuration File that acts as the default list of JDBC properties when creating a new connection profile. The JDBC Property Configuration File is located in the user's workspace .metadata/Teradata directory and allows for deployment of Teradata Studio Express with a different set of JDBC properties. An empty JDBC Configuration File indicates that no JDBC properties will be set and connections will use the JDBC driver default values.

  • Logging Options

Log messages are now stored in the teradata.log file, located in the user's workspace .metadata/Teradata directory. There is also a Teradata Log console view, which can be used to display log messages. The logging levels of the two displays are independently controlled and can be set in Teradata Datatools Preferences page.

  • Result Set Viewer Improvements

In previous releases, the Teradata Result Set Viewer was displayed inside the Teradata View. It has now been moved to its own view display, allowing users to view result sets at the same time as viewing database object information in the Teradata View. Additionally, the Result Set Viewer has added a toolbar button to allow users to rename result set tabs and made performance enhancements when displaying large result set data.

  • Toggle Button Auto Activation of Code Assist

A new toolbar button,  , has been added to the main, topmost toolbar that allows the user to toggle on the auto activation of code assist. Code assist provides drop down syntax suggestions as you pause while entering your SQL statement in the SQL Editor. This operation uses metadata from the database so for large databases the operation can take a long time. Code assist is turned off when Teradata Studio Express is initially installed.  You can turn it on by clicking the Code Assist toggle button.

  • User Control of Visible Tabs within Teradata View

This feature provides the ability to hide tabs that are displayed in the Teradata View for database objects. Tabs that provide details of the database objects can be hidden by pressing the tab’s close button. Tabs that are hidden will not be displayed when objects of that type are later shown in the Teradata View. Hidden tabs can be restored by selecting the “Restore Tabs” button or menu item in the Teradata View’s toolbar.

A tab’s visibility can also be managed in the Teradata Datatools Preferences page. The Teradata View Object Visibility preference page displays a list of the Teradata View tabs whose visibility can be set. Tabs with their checkboxes checked will be shown in the Teradata View when appropriate. Tabs that are unchecked will not be displayed.

Well, I tried to install on a windows 7 PC 32 bit OS and I get the error message - Source file not found for data1.cab. I saved to desktop. In order to work I had to copy the .cab file to the temp location ' C:\TEMP\Temp1_teradatasqla__win32_x86.14.00.00.00.zip\teradatasqla__win32_x86.14.00.00.00'
and it worked.

Thanks,
Vasu

I just did a download as well, unzipped into my install directory and the Data1.cab file is there. I ran the setup.exe and the install was successful. Was there any problems during your download? It sounds like the second download got it all.

Well I ran the studio express msi file. should that be a problem for not having the data1.cab file?

Thanks,
Vasu

Looks like I need "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.6 or greater." How can I tell if that is installed on my system? (Please also post the instructions on the Download page.)

To find out what version of java you are running, open a dos window and enter: java -version

i am absolutely new to the world of teradata. i have a requirement to pull data from TD to SQL Server using SSIS. now, what i am not sure about is, does Teradata Studio Express contains database engine, where we can create sample databases on TD so that it can be used as part of development work? if not, can you please post how to get an express edition of TD db engine for the dev work.

Studio Express is intended for helping users in extracting data from Teradata, writing and running SQL. I would suggest that you download Teradata Plugin for Eclipse. It provides dialogs to help you create database objects: Schemas (Databases), Tables, Views, etc. It also has provides a feature to Copy objects from one database to another. Check out the Getting Started article to help you get started:http://developer.teradata.com/tools/articles/getting-started-with-teradata-plug-in-for-eclipse

Very nice! It seems to have mainly the same look and feel as the 13.10 SQL Assistant Java Edition, but seems to be pretty stable.

Is there any way to get it to allow the user to have more than one of them opened at the same time. I always get the error "Workspace in use: The application can not be started because its workspace is in use. Only one application can use a workspace at a time."

Also, why was copy changed to Ctrl+Insert over the standard Ctrl+C? I believe that was what it was in the previous version and pretty much a Windows standard.

Is there a way to change this back?

Found this on the other page.

removing the ctrl-Insert key binding. This seems to be blocking the ctrl-C. Bring up the Preferences dialog. Go to General>Keys. Scroll down and select the Copy Ctrl+Insert key binding. Click Unbind Command. Restart Teradata Studio Express. The cntrl-C should be enabled for SQL Editor and Teradata View SQL window.

@bjteradata, You can not share a workspace. If you want to have two instances of Studio Express opened you will have to open the second one with the -data option to specify a different workspace location. For example, sqlaje -data c:\newWorkspace

We are looking into the Ctrl+Copy issue. Glad you found the workaround.

Hi ,
the below sql is working fine in SQL assistant and giving error in Teradata Studio Express14

Error in SQLAJE:Executed as Single statement. Failed [3577 : HY000] Row size or Sort Key size overflow.

STATEMENT 1: Select Statement failed.

SQL is :

Select

USERNAME,
qrylog.errortext,
qrylog.LogonDateTime,
qrylog.TotalIOCount,
qrylog.AmpCpuTime,
qrylog.NumResultRows ,
qrylog.APPID,

spoolusage
From
dbc.dbqlogtbl qrylog,DBC.QryLogSQL b
Where
qrylog.QueryID=b.QueryID
And qrylog.procid=b.procid
sample 10

Please let me know why its failing in SQLAJE.

Java Version:

java version "1.6.0_31"

One difference may be the TMODE of the connection. The default for Studio Express is ANSI mode, with SQL Assistant and ODBC, the default is TERA. TMODE=ANSI is what is recommended. But try changing the TMODE in your connection profile to TERA and see if that resolves your overflow problem.

HI..after changing the TMODE to TERA the query is working fine.

New to Teradata... I have TD Studio Express installed; I am connected to my DB; I've inherited some queries that work fine. A few questions: I would like to convert the dozen or so queries into a batch process to run from my desktop (hopefully this is only an intermediate step). I have read of folks using a command language that supports verbs like ".SET" and ".EXPORT". I cannot execute these commands within SE14. What is the context within which I could script something like this?

.SET and .EXPORT are BTEQ commands. BTEQ is an abbreviation of Basic Teradata Query, which is a general-purpose, command-based program that allows users on a workstation to communicate with one of more Teradata Database systems. BTEQ commands will not work from Studio Express.

Studio Express does not currently have a real scripting language. It is something we are looking at for future release. Although, there is an option to create a SQL Run process that contains SQL statements. In the upper toolbar, click the Run toolbar, then Run Configurations menu option. Right click on the Eclipse Data Tools in the left hand side to create a new run configuration. Under the Main tab, choose a profile and database from the drop down list. Select the Adhoc SQL option and enter your SQL statements in the Run area. Click Apply and Run. To repeat the run configuration. click the Run toolbar menu and choose the Run option. I hope that is helpful.

Just pulled down a copy of Terradata Express Studio. It installed without any issues. Fired up and went to make a connection to a TD Database and had no clue where a sample DB was. I read through the release definition to see if I missed something obvious, it simply assumes you already have a database and credentials. I’d like to take a peek at the different sample DBs and run a few queries to see what is actually available. Is there somewhere I can either access or download a sample Terradata DB?

You can download Teradata Express for a sample Teradata Database. It is available on the Download page.

I have columns like "VARCHAR(9000) CHARACTER SET LATIN NOT CASESPECIFIC COMPRESS ," in table and I am trying to export the table using Teradata Studio express (14.02.00.00) and I have an error
"Teradata Export Error Occurred: Error Code =  3577

SQL State = HY000 Message = [Teradata Database] [TeraJDBC 14.00.00.21] [Error 3577] [SQLState HY000] Row size or Sort Key size overflow. Teradata Export Failed"

It's working with SQLA....I have set TMODE=TERA and I tried with CHARSET=ASCII and CHARSET=UTF8 combinations in STUDIO with no luck...

Please whenever you see this error
java version "1.6.0_31"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_31-b05)

it means you have both java 64bit and 32bit installed on your machine, just uninstall the java version not associated with your teradata studio and should be good to go

@nordin, You will need a Teradata Database system set up. If you don't have one, you can download Teradata Express, which is a VMware or EC2 image. Refer to the Download page for a link to download Teradata Express (http://downloads.teradata.com/download). Once you have your Teradata Database system, you will then create a Connection Profile to your Teradata Database system and run a SQL DDL statement to create your database. You can download the Teradata Studio product which has dialogs to help you create a Teradata Database.
